My Students

Working with teachers and students in grades 3-5 in reading and writing is so rewarding. The students at my school love learning and come from many lower social-economic families. The families are wonderful and very supportive of the school when they can be. Many of the students come from families where both parents have to work to make ends meet. Reading instruction at school is key, as access to books is sparse outside of school. I love helping young readers find the books that they will love, and not want to put down.

My Project

These books will be used to hook reluctant readers and help them to love reading. Students will be able to read these books in groups of six and receive instruction in accuracy, fluency, and comprehension while enjoying the gift of being able to talk about the books with other students.

Students need to read increasingly more difficult books, and choosing books that they will love will make the extra effort and stretch so much more enjoyable and worth it to the reader.

These books will help provide the motivation for readers to increase their reading and comprehension ability. When students can read books with a group, and laugh and talk about these common books, the enjoyment, and understanding of the book deepens.
