Help Students Stay Mentally and Socially Healthy

My Project

Middle school students are a wonder to behold! Their bodies and minds are changing and growing at a rapid pace. They also have more freedoms in school with changing classes and having more than 1 teacher. They are being exposed to a more diverse population. Due to this, many middle school students experience bouts of stress, anger, confusion, and even depression. As they go through puberty they deal with changes in shape, skin and voice that can add to their mental health concerns.

The Scholastic "Choices" magazine contains the latest on teen health as well as social and mental well-being.

The publication has interesting articles written for students that we can use to start conversations about what they are dealing with. While support for student's mental health mainly falls to school-based counselors, there is much that classroom teachers can do to support students' well-being. Using the "Choices" publication can help even the most withdrawn students to become aware that what they are experiencing is a normal part of growing up.

Supply money we receive from the state of Florida does not cover magazine subscriptions. I am asking for a class set of 25, so my students will be able to share them and use them as a resource and reference. The subscription will also cover a digital version that can be used and assigned through their learning management system.
