Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach high school mathematics in a high-need, largely populated urban high school. My classrooms are inclusive of students of all learning levels.
In a classroom with 34 students, it is hard to give individualized attention to every child. Some students pay attention very well and others can be off track at times. During a lesson it helps if teachers know who is comprehending the content and who is not. It is hard to do this until giving a quiz or test, grading those quizzes, and reteaching the material.
I would like to provide each of my students with a white board and a dry erase marker during a lesson so that I can have students solve a problem and show me their responses immediately. Not only will this keep students engaged, involved, and accountable during a lesson but it will also provide me with immediate feedback of who understands the material and who does not.
In a large, public high school it is easy for students to slip through the cracks, hurting their chances of going on to higher education. If you support this project you will help promote student engagement and success. Students will more likely participate in class, giving them a better chance of comprehending material and engaging in higher level thinking that will help them move on to college.
