Help Students Learn How to Help Themselves

My students need access to resources to get them the help they desperately need.

My Students

Last year, my students and I were in awe as thousands of dollars flooded in for coats for the homeless kids in my district. The empathy and generosity of strangers resulted in almost $40,000 in coats, allowing us to give a new coat to every kid in need in my district and to every single student in a neighboring elementary school (almost 1,000 students in need in one school!). I cannot begin to describe the impact this experience had on my students, my own children, and me.

As we watched our library fill with boxes of coats, I couldn't help wonder about the silent kids, the ones too shy or embarrassed to seek help and who instead choose to struggle in silence.

I wondered how we could work towards breaking the cycle, to lessen the struggle of the next generation to meet their basic needs. In that mindset, a group of friends and I decided to create a resource tin designed to offer kids access to free community services. I realize we can't "fix" homelessness, suicide, or depression, but there are many people with resources designed to help my kids.

My Project

We designed a tin small enough to fit in a kid's pocket to avoid the identification as "the homeless kid." One of our students designed the art, creating a positive image of "Stand Strong" on the front cover. The tin will be filled with the lemon candy sought in this project and, as the kids eat through the candy, they'll see a hidden message:

"Often the path sucks, but the destination doesn't have to.

Stick it out. Find the happy. Stand strong."

The outside bottom of the tin will be printed with contact information for FREE local resources, specifically focused on youth in need, including shelters, food resources, suicide, LGBT+ support, and our Rape Crisis Center. Our hope is that our tin will provide the information students need to get help even if they don't feel comfortable talking in depth to a parent, teacher, or counselor.

The idea is simple. Give the tins to school counselors, administrators, and teachers who will distribute them to students in need. The tins are nondescript, designed by their peers, and filled with sour candy (a favorite among my kids) which can be refilled each time they visit their counselor, an incentive to keep in touch.

It's a very simple concept: give kids the information they need to help themselves and, by doing so, learn how to advocate and aggressively pursue lives driven by their own purpose rather than circumstances that often seem beyond their control.
