Help Students Learn Financial Literacy While Learning Math!

My students need financial literacy resources such as textbooks, money management activities, a computer-based personal finance simulation, and board game.

My Students

These students need to learn how to manage money! Give them the resources that will teach them how to use their math skills in the real world!

I teach Title I mathematics to middle school students who are 2 to 3 years behind grade level in math.

Our school is a public charter school in a low-income area. The majority of my students are on free or reduced lunch and face significant life challenges outside of the classroom, let alone the struggles that they face inside of the classroom.

My Project

Before I became a math teacher, I worked in commercial banking. It never ceased to amaze me as to how financially illiterate many people I associated with were. I truly believe that if our students need to learn ANY math while in middle school and high school, it is the everyday math that they will be using regularly in their lives. I want to teach my students about what it means to be financially literate. They need to know about budgeting, managing a checking account, using a credit card responsibly, how to shop using discounts and sales, what is involved in renting or purchasing a home, how to buy a car and the related expenses, and so many other practical lessons. Our current textbooks teach so little about financial math. This request will provide our classroom with the resources necessary to teach students the importance of applying their math skills to the real world. The computer software will allow students to simulate real-world financial decision making.

I truly feel that the future of business and commerce in our country depends on the financial literacy of our citizenship.

Giving our middle school and high school students the mathematical understanding of basic financial concepts is critical for their future success in life. The sooner we provide our students with this knowledge, the better off they will be. Please support these efforts!
