Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I have the most optimistic, hard-working, and loving 3rd grade students.
They come from a low-income community in South-East San Diego.
I say low-income and not impoverished because these children come from families of hope. They may not have the financial benefits of families in other neighborhoods, but the parents make sure their children come to school with a positive attitude and are ready for learning.
Our school population is 82.5% Hispanic, 10.5 % African American, and 3.5% white, 1.6% Asian, American Indian .5%, and .7% two or more races.
96.8% of the students are socioeconomically disadvantaged, 51% of our students are English Learners, 16% are students with disabilities, and 15% are homeless.
Our students will be introduced to higher level readings. Our goal is to strengthen their literacy while introducing them to a classic book series. Reading the first Harry Potter book will open their worlds and imaginations to the fun that is reading. Having a book to read along with will benefit the student's engagement with the text, building vocabulary and comprehending the text.
We are an inner-city school without any outside funds. Many of our lessons and projects do not cost much, however, other lessons require extra funding. If you believe in these students, please donate a few dollars to help us purchase this valuable reading unit for our students.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
