This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
What to do during those days we can't go outside to play? Let's face it not everyday is a sunny and warm day. We do not have much to do except to watch a movie, which at times can be sending the wrong message to our students. We have 80 students sitting in the auditorium with nothing to do.
Our students are eager Kindergarteners who have nothing to do but watch a movie on rainy days.
As teachers we send the message that we should be active learners and build community. During rainy days we are unable to play outside in the playground and when we stay indoors all we can do is watch a movie. In order to change our indoor recess we need your help to purchase games that promote active thinking. Active play and board games is a great opportunity for our students to learn how to share, take turns and be fair. Our school is in a very poor area. Our school is a Title I school. This means that 99% of our school population lives below the poverty level and is entitled to a free lunch program. Although the students in our school are very poor and have limited resources they are always eager to learn and are very enthusiastic. Most of our students live in housing projects or shelters. The resources available to the school are very limited and we are unable to buy equipment
My Project
We need Board Games for our students to play with and be entertained on rainy days. Our resource are limited but our desire to learn and grow is abundant. We would like these board games to play with during recess on rainy days. We need to stimulate our minds and build community and this cannot be attained by watching a movie. We ask our students to limit the time they watch television but we are not sending that message when we put them in front of a television at school. We feel that if they were to play board games it would be more beneficial to their critical thinking development. Board games would also teach our students how to play cooperatively with others as well as teach them how to take turns. Playing board games also boosts the child’s competitive and cooperative personality. Remember when we were kids and we used to play Scrabble, Boggle, Candy Land and so many fun and exciting games. I would love my Kindergarteners to learn how to play these games.
With such a high poverty level in our community we are unable to expose these children to board games to stimulate their minds.
We would be so thankful for your donations if we can purchase these games for active play time during rainy days. These game will teach our children so many wonderful skills such as taking turns, being fair and sharing not to mention the academic learning opportunities. Children learn through play and this is a great opportunity to learn. We need these board games.
