My students are a wide range of ethnic groups and monitories that are doing everything possible to pursue STEM careers. Many of them are first generation students here in America and many of them will be the first in their family to graduate from high school. Given my background as an engineer, I am doing my best to encourage students to cultivate their creative and critical thinking skills as they explore ways to design new solutions to everyday problems. In addition, I build in a collaborative component in all my classes and students work with their peers to complete the engineering design process. Students in ELD/ESL, Special Education, and At-risk program are all in my class. I encourage all them to break stereotypes and do their best. A major push for more minorities and women to follow their passion and enter into STEM fields.
My Project
With the pandemic, so many of my students crave a chance to express their engineering skills and collaboration with their peers. By working together on labs, they are not only able to master the standards for our class, but also excel in their social emotional learning needs. These supplies will help me create teams of students who can work together to do labs in our class. Since so many of them come from diverse backgrounds, it is my hope they can learn from each other to help solve engineering problems in our world. I plan to use the materials like the plastic boxes to organize lab materials into teams. Next, I plan to use the craft sticks to help students build models of bridges, airplane, and cars. We will then use this material to do CAD modeling. The scissors will be needed to cut the materials. The twine and blue tape will be used to connect the wood pieces. And, the compass will be used to practice math formulas.
