Nurturing interest and creativity on various disciplines in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics among my kids is one of my professional goals. Our school STEM club benefits from this advocacy. Members meet and collaborate regularly together with my colleague in creating projects.
About 80% of the students in our school commute from an outlying area of 112 square miles to the campus.
School data shows that the percentage of students who receive free and reduced priced meals continues to increase each year.
Despite the odds, the members of the STEM club are empowered to take ownership of their learning and show initiative to create STEMworks projects that can serve the community and at the same time showcase at the conference. They are inspired by the STEMworks Hawaii slogan "Download knowledge, Upload service" in conceptualizing their community based project.
Last year, three students together with my colleague participated in the conference. Students were inspired to share the knowledge and firsthand experiences to the members. Their enthusiasm and gained knowledge served as a catalyst to empower members to take this year's challenge to participate actively on the 7th Annual Hawaii STEM Conference which will be held at Maui on May 6-7, 2016.
My Project
The donation will be utilized to help cover the hotel accommodation for two nights at Wailea Marriott Resort and Spa at Maui, Hawaii, and some food expenses for the duration of the conference. Students will be participating on the various breakout sessions and will also be showcasing their creativity and technical skills on CAD software, GIS Story Map, T-Shirt design, Photography, etc.
Likewise, the trip will also provide them the opportunity to learn from the different participating schools, to experience the excitement of a regional technology conference, to meet experts on various fields, and to showcase their projects.
Your donation to this project will also help them teach back to STEMwork students in our school and also help inspire grade school students as part of their future community based project. Therefore, your generosity will make a positive impact in their quest for downloading knowledge and uploading service.
Your donation will greatly make a positive difference in the life of STEM participants.
It will elevate them to the next level of STEM awareness and new perspectives, thus provide exposure to the various careers available in the future.
Statistics shows that in Hawaii, 71% of new STEM jobs are in computing and 8% of STEM graduates are in Computer Science. With your donation, you help address this this concern and you provide positive impact in my students' future.
