Hello out there. I recently took a Physical Education teaching position at Pollocksville Elementary School in Jones County, NC. The county is extremely poor and very rural with no industry. The county has little funding for resource classes such as Physical Education or music. My school is a Title 1 school with currently over 80% of of its students on free/reduced lunch. Many of these children come from very difficult backgrounds with little opportunity for success. In many cases, the only opportunity for success these children have is education. Unfortunately, children raised in more affluent counties and school systems have more opportunity for success because of the funding. These are great kids at this school, and they should be afforded the same opportunity to succeed as any other child. I am taking over a program with little or no equipment, and the equipment I do have is in very poor condition. The kids are desperate for athletic equipment. Without leagues for sports in the county, physical education class is the only exercise many of these children receive, so it is imperative that I get proper equipment to get this program going in the right direction. I have requested three items that I belive will help these kids become more physically fit. The first is a the pillow polo sticks. These sticks look like giant q-tips. The class is divided into two teams and it is played like floor hockey. The sticks are heavily padded to avoid injury. The students play a fast paced game that strenghtens their endurance. Second, I have requested scooter hockey sticks. The scooter hocky sticks we currently have are either broken or cracked. They are also plastic and they could cut a child. The requested sticks are rubber, indestructable, and safe. Third, I have requested 24 hula hoops. I have books of hula hoop activities that increase mobility, endurance, and coordination. Our current hoops are either broken, cracked, or kinked. I have requested more durable hoops that never kink. These items will get the kids more physically active and they will last for years.
