Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
A typical day in our classroom could be described as one that is filled with 25 five year olds who are eager to learn! At any time you can find them working independently on their writing or in groups conducting a science investigation! The room is designed for them to access content in various ways.
We teach kindergarten to a class of vivacious and culturally diverse group of children in Brooklyn.
Our school recently became a S.T.E.A.M school, which stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics. The students are often given a problem to solve. They do this by collaborating on a design with their peers, communicating their findings, reflecting on their solutions and are finally given an opportunity to redesign. Our students come from many backgrounds and speak different languages, so we are constantly thinking of ways to make my classroom even more colorful, inviting, and accessible to them. Just as we hope to inspire my students, it is they who inspire us! We thank you in advance for your support in our next generation of leaders!
My Project
The "AeroGarden Herbie Kid's Garden with Pizza Party Activity Kit" will allow my students to become facilitators in their own learning by having the opportunity to plant, grow, and harvest herbs and vegetables which will be used in conjunction with our STEM science and cooking curriculum. The design of this particular model is very interactive and contains porthole windows for the students to view the roots as the plants grow. The students will then be able to use what we have grown in healthy recipes we create together.
The AreoGarden will allow my students to go on an indoor gardening adventure, which will sprout their excitement to learn about growing herbs hydroponically, and how water, oxygen, nutrition and light can help a plant thrive.
The AeroGarden "Pizza Party", "Mint Ice-cream Social", "Lettuce For Two", & "SnapDragon Puppet Show" kits contain seeds for: oregano, genovese basil, mint, romaine lettuce, and snapdragon flower seeds. Each kit also contains a 32-page activity book, plant food, grow sponges (4), grow domes (2), dropper, dry erase marker, and tape. The "garden sheers" will allow me to help the students harvest their plants.
These kits are student friendly, and allow the students to become fully engaged in what they are harvesting. These kits will allow the students to have a pizza making party using the oregano and basil, have an ice-cream party using the mint they harvested, create a recipe for a salad using the lettuce they grow, and put on a puppet show using the movable dragon-shaped blooms of the snap-dragon flowers.
