Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach a Life Skills class with 8 boys and 1 girl. My students are unique learners. I have 2 student who have Down Syndrome, 5 students who have Autism and 2 who are Developmentally Delayed. They are all unique in their own way. Four of my students are verbal and the other five are nonverbal. I have 3 students who are in kindergarten, 2 in 1st grade, 2 in 2nd grade and 2 in 3rd grade. It is hard for them to express their wants and needs, as students with disabilities struggle with academics and motor skills.
My students need help because they are unable to communicate their wants and needs.
Our school is a Title I school where 100% of the students receive free breakfast and lunch. 50% of my students come from single-parent homes.
My Project
I teach a Highly Structured Class. I have six students who have Autism, two who have Down Syndrome and one who has a Specific Learning Disability. They all identify to a certain color. Their personal space in group area, kitchen area, and their schedule as well as their Icon folder are all the same color. The soft seats of different colors will be perfect for them. They will be able to seat on the floor and listen to a story that is read to them or they can sit and look at books. They will also use the colored soft seats as they sit with their headphones and learning by using different programs on the IPAD.
