Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are of exceptional needs with disabilities that range from mild to severe; most are impacted in all areas of development (e.g. health, physical, cognitive, communication). I work with them one on one, they each have their own personalities and are unique in their complex needs, strengths and interest. I
All of my students benefit from tactile learning experiences where they can explore with their hands to further their progress in literacy and mathematics and are from families with limited income.
They are amazing children who are precious and have families that love them deeply as it is evident in how they are cared for as they have intensive daily living needs. For example, I have students that have suffered a massive seizure at a young age which have set them back in their development. They use to speak, read, play with peers and after the seizure, they are unable to walk, talk, read and require significant accommodations & modifications of instruction. To say the least, it has been a traumatic experience for the student and their families. Yet, they persist with living, the parents believe in the well being of their child and their development --and so doI!
My Project
My students’ families would benefit tremendously from your generosity so that their child can experience sensory input to engage, to enjoy and to acquire early literacy and math skills. For example, the “What's Inside? Soft Feely Box” will stimulate their thinking to use their hands and mind to guess what they are touching and is hidden in the box. Or, the “Soft Safe Building Blocks” is an opportunity to build with soft and therefore safe materials. Playing with blocks help children develop their vocabularies, improves math skills, and even teaches them about gravity, balance, and geometry. Building is all about size, shape, weight, leverage, and balance, and as the child works this out, their building and block play will become more and more complex.
One of the many great hands-on learning benefits is that hands on learning helps to stimulate growth on both sides of the brain.
