Help Special Education Students Communicate

My students need two iPad mini tablets and protective cover to help them express their needs and for better communication.

My Students

Have you wondered what it feels like when you want to express something and you don't have the skills and the means to do it? It's frustrating right? That's why I want to provide my special education students with tablet which is a great tool that will help them communicate with others.

My class is a special day class for severely handicapped students.

I have 9 students with different exceptionalities. Few of them are under the autism spectrum. However, majority of my students have speech and language impairment which makes it difficult for them to communicate. This often results in frustration on the part of my students and the teacher as well. Most students in my class are nonverbal and use picture exchange communication system (PECS) to communicate. This is just one way for them to express their feelings and wants. There are other resources available and one of them is the use of tablet that can have access to different apps that will help my students communicate better and easier. If this project is funded, several resources will be available for my students to use in the classroom depending on their needs.

My Project

I was inspired when I saw on television an autistic student gave his graduation speech with a help from an iPad. This made me realize that I should not lower my expectations just because my students have difficulty communicating. This prompted me to request for tablets for my students to use. An iPad is a great tool for communicating. It can be customized and tailored according to the needs of my students. It is touch screen so it is accessible for my students with coordination difficulties. My students can use wide variety of applications available to help them express their wants, needs, and feelings. Some applications available are TalkTablet, Communication Easy, Talkboard, and many more. With a simple touch of the icons my students will be able to communicate just like other students. I also included protective case in my request since my students are young and they have a tendency to be careless. The case will help protect the iPad so that my students can use it longer.

These requested materials will help my students feel successful in the classroom because they will be able to communicate with their teacher and other people around them.

Students will experience less frustration. They will be able to create words, phrases, sentences, and even stories by tapping the images from the apps. They will get excited to go to school because they will get the chance to learn and it will be fun for them as well.
