Help Spanish DLI 2nd Graders Make a New Sock Puppet!
Help me give my students supplies like colorful socks, googly eyes, buttons, feathers, pom poms and a hot glue gun (to assemble with adult support) to make sock puppets for Spanish conversation practice.
I teach the Spanish side of Dual Language Immersion in our school. I have two groups of Dual Language Immersion students, 64 in total. Normally, half the day they learn in English and the other half they learn in Spanish. Due to COVID-19 we are switching to an A/B schedule, where we will trade every other day instead of in the middle of the day to avoid cross-contamination. I teach the Spanish side, and the majority of my students do not speak Spanish as their native language. They have had one year of experience in Spanish from 1st grade.
These kiddos are so resilient and have gone through a lot in their schooling experience with the lockdown and online school last year.
I hope to make this year a fun experience for everyone while still practicing health guidelines.
My Project
Our district is going head-first, back-to-school on Tuesday, August 18th. There are many new guidelines we must follow to ensure everyone's health, like frequent hand washing, wearing masks, desks facing forward, and social distancing. In the DLI classroom, students are used to interacting on a constant basis with their peers in "collaborative conversations."
Unfortunately, with the new COVID-19 restrictions, it will be difficult for my students to have an intelligible conversation with a mask on, 6 feet apart, and in a second language.
Maybe we don't seem to have things going for us, but like the problem-solver teacher I am, I've come up with a solution. Puppets.
We are going to make individual sock puppets for my kiddos to converse with! Each child will be given the opportunity to choose a sock color (from a rainbow assortment) and then decorate their very own puppet to their heart's desire (with adult support for the glue gun). After, we will name our puppets and become BFFs. Who knows, we might even celebrate their pretend birthdays. The possibilities are endless.
We will use these sock puppets throughout the year to "chat with a peer." Maybe it sounds crazy for a kid to converse with a sock on their hand, but I can see 7 and 8 years being All.Over.It. Anytime my students need to have a two-way conversation, we'll whip out these guys and chat away! Then we'll come back together and share out what was said.
