Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach 25 of the hardest working 5th graders in Bronx, New York.
My students are bright, curious and engaged.
They give their 100% each day. My students come a title 1 school and many qualify for free or reduced lunch.
My Project
Representation is important. As my 5th graders begin learning about the Civil Rights Movement, I am requesting books that represent diverse figures, perspectives and experiences.
These books will be used for class reading during distance learning in order to provide representation for often marginalized communities and normalize discussions about issues related to social justice.
Many of the books on this list include diverse figures and are written by diverse authors. I am requesting multiple copies of books written by these authors so that I can meet with students in small groups. These books will also be used during books clubs and help fill our growing library.
When students read more, they learn more, and are exposed to different genres and writing styles. They also fall in love with reading and reading becomes a lifelong endeavor. Having all of these extra reading options in my classroom will continue to foster a lifelong love of reading for my students!
