My students are an active group 5th graders from Boston. We are a diverse mix and hail from seven different countries. Most of my students are bilingual. We like hands on learning and engaging activities. Throughout the year my students have shown themselves to be dedicated learners who have grown in their understanding of math, reading, social studies and science.
While we have the same struggles and concerns that many classrooms have, one significant obstacle to our learning is that while our school is in session until the last week of June, we have no air conditioning and our room is frequently over 90 degrees.
My Project
My students are hard working and industrious, however our building is older and completely unairconditioned. At the beginning and end of the year, it is completely sweltering. Students have a difficult time working and learning in these conditions and an air conditioner for our room would help us continue to be productive and focused when distractions are at maximum.
It is very difficult to continue learning when our room is over 90 degrees.
This project would enable us to reduce our temperature in our room to a more manageable level. Students who are more comfortable are less likely to miss school, and more likely to focus on their learning while they are here.
