We are a public elementary school in New York City with a large population (of nearly 1300 students) that is culturally diverse and of low socioeconomic status. Our school has a very healthy music program that includes: band, chorus, violin, keyboard and guitar. This year we are encouraging our instrumental students to compose their own musical selections.
Although we have a charming auditorium for student performances, there is no place to securely store instruments in the immediate area. We have to walk to a classroom on the other side of the building to store instruments and other valuables in a locked closet.
Carrying hundreds of instruments back and forth between the stage and the secure closet is not only physically demanding but also a challenge in preparedness. Often, a teachable moment might arise that can't be properly capitalized upon simply because the tools needed are locked away instead of readily available in the room where we're working.
Because our focus this year is on helping students compose their own original pieces, it is even more important that they have immediate access to all of the instruments that might aid in their creative process.
Your contribution can empower the next Mozart! We need a secure, mobile storage locker where we can store instruments and have them readily available during class time. We also need a cabinet that is mobile, so we can easily clear the stage area for concerts and other performances.
