Help Second Graders Put STEM Exploration into Their Fairy Tales
My students need two Fairy Tales Problem Solving STEM Kits for hands-on STEM exploration materials that will use fairy tale challenges to teach them how to solve problems in fun interactive ways.
FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Marosi's classroom raised $424

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My classroom is full of future scientists, engineers, and mathematicians. We need more hands-on scientific exploration activities that can excite my students and encourage them to stay in school and pursue careers in the STEM fields.
Our school is located in a high poverty immigrant community in California.
The parents of most of my students have never finished high school and my students will hopefully be the first ones in their families to go to college. My classroom consists primarily of students who are learning English as a second language. I also mainstream deaf and hard of hearing students, autistic students, and learning disabled students in my all inclusive classroom. In addition, I partner for science with a 3rd grade class and a class of hard of hearing second graders and they will also participate in this project.
Currently, we have weekly STEAM rotations where my students, their 3rd grade buddies and the 2nd grade DHH students work in small groups to complete a set of STEAM activities. My students love these activities!
My Project
The Fairy Tales Problem Solving STEM kits will expose my students and their 3rd grade buddies to real world science, technology, engineering, and math activities that will enable my students to really experience science and math in new and exciting ways as they discover the STEM in their favorite fairy tales.
My students will be able to use the 3 different STEM kits included in this set.
The 3 kits are based on "The Gingerbread Man," "Little Red Riding Hood," and "Rapunzel." These kits will encourage my students to solve problems involving some of their favorite fairy tale characters. My students will have to plan, create and test solutions to help a prince scale a tower to rescue Rapunzel, to get The Gingerbread Man across a river, and to help Little Red Riding Hood put together a basket to carry apples for her grandmother. My students will be working with their 3rd grade buddies and the DHH students in small groups to complete these problem solving challenges. This will allow my students to practice working cooperatively and using communication skills to share ideas.
One of the best things about these resources is that these STEM kits will be able to be used every year so hundreds of my future students will also benefit from this project.
My students love science! I try to make my science lessons exciting by bringing their science lessons to life so all students can be exposed to the science curriculum. Most of my students have never been exposed to these interesting STEM activities. I want my students to be able to see and do these exciting experiments. I hope this project will help inspire my students' imagination and positively influence many of these students to stay in school and pursue careers in the STEM fields.
