Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a teacher to some 27 wonderful second graders in the Bronx. Our school has no official social studies textbook for the grade. The workbooks that we have been given are old and 2 students have to share each workbook. Additionally, they are not allowed to write in them. Lastly, these workbooks are so dry and boring, that I hardly use them. I teach the workbook content from other sources, mostly read alouds.
Due to the fact that our social studies curriculum is somewhat dry and doesn't address geographical skills, I teach my students a lot of geographical and map skills, by using worksheets and the large class map. I would also like to boost our social studies curriculum by having a social studies center. Students would have a place where they can practice map skills during the time when I meet with my guided reading group daily.
Getting familiar with maps will be an essential part of my students life. In life we have to read all types of maps and it is important that children become familiar with maps and how to use them to gain information. Additionally, I believe that through studying maps of other countries, students become aware that there is a large world out there. Different countries also have different cultures and belief. I constantly remind my students through class projects of the different countries and their traditions. Children need to realize that they need to be open to diversity and that they do not live in isolation in the world. It is for these reasons that I believe my students would benefit from the geogrphic material that I have requested for my class.
