My Students

My students love to hear a good story! Many of them don't have any books at home or anyone who can read to them. They need to hear enjoyable stories at school. These 17 Mo Willems books, the Pigeon stuffed animal, and the set of Elephant & Piggie Finger Puppets will be a great way to get my students excited about reading.

I have a wonderful class of second graders.

Our school is located in a high immigrant, low income community in California. The parents of most of my students never finished high school. Many of my students will be the first ones in the family to finish high school and hopefully college, too. Most of my students are English learners whose parents are unable to read to them in English. I have several students with learning disabilities, and I also mainstream several autistic students and hard of hearing students into my all inclusive classroom.

My Project

I love introducing my students to memorable characters and enjoyable books. This set of Pigeon and Elephant & Piggie books by Mo Willems is exactly what I need. I will use this set of books as part of our language arts unit called "Sharing Stories" and also as part of my ELD lessons. This project has 17 different Pigeon and Elephant & Piggie stories along with a Pigeon stuffed animal and Elephant & Piggie Finger Puppets. I plan on reading one of the books each day during story time after lunch. My students are going to love hearing the stories, getting to hold the Pigeon stuffed animal, and putting on the finger puppets during story time. They will also be very motivated to have the Pigeon stuffed animal sit on their desks as a reward for good behavior throughout the day. I also will encourage my students to choose their favorite Mo Willems book and practice reading it until they feel confident that they can read the book aloud to the class. The funny easy text and the repetition found throughout these books will also greatly benefit my students who are learning English.

My students love good stories.

I know they will enjoy listening to the 17 different Mo Willems books. I try to make my Language Arts lessons exciting so all students can be exposed to the curriculum. I want my students to be able to listen to, enjoy, practice reading, and act out these wonderful stories. I want this project to help inspire my students' imagination and positively influence many of these students to stay in school and possibly pursue careers in the liberal arts.
