Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My classroom is full of future scientists. We need a Ladybug Land kit, books about birds, and supplies that can really teach my students about the life cycles of these amazing animals. These materials can excite my students and encourage them to stay in school and pursue careers in science.

My students are wonderful second graders.

Our school is located in a high poverty immigrant community in California. The parents of most of my students have never finished high school and my students will hopefully be the first ones in their families to go to college. My classroom consists primarily of students who are learning English as a second language. I also mainstream deaf and hard of hearing students, autistic students and learning disabled students in my all inclusive classroom. In addition, I partner for science with a 3rd grade class and a class of hard of hearing second graders and they will also participate in this project.

My Project

My second grade students are about to begin a science and Language Arts unit on animal life cycles. I would like my students to really learn about the life cycle of birds and ladybugs in a new and exciting way.

I'm asking for a Ladybug Land kit, life cycle books about birds and other animals, a set of Tilt and View Animal X-Rays, and art supplies for follow-up art activities so my class, our 3rd grade buddies, and our partner deaf and hard of hearing class will be able to go beyond just reading about the life cycles of birds and ladybugs in their science and Language Arts textbooks.

Instead, they will be able to watch the ladybug life cycle as it is happening before their eyes. They will also be able to see, touch, and keep a real peacock feather.

I'm asking for art supplies to complete a ladybug art project and a hand print bird art project as follow-up activities to go along with our life cycles unit. This project will encourage and excite my students to fly into our amazing science and Language Arts unit on animal life cycles!

My students love science!

I try to make my science lessons exciting by bringing science lessons to life so all students can be exposed to the science curriculum. I want my students to be able to learn about the ladybug life cycle by observing real ladybug larva. I want my class to learn about birds by reading the bird books and looking at the amazing pictures. My wish is that this project will help inspire my students' imaginations and positively influence many of these students to stay in school and pursue careers in science.
