This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students love science, math, and art and I try to make their lessons exciting by bringing these lessons to life so all students can be exposed to the STEAM curriculum. I hope this project will help inspire my students' imagination and positively influence many of these students to stay in school and pursue careers in the STEAM fields.

My students are wonderful second graders.

Our school is located in a high poverty immigrant community in California. The parents of most of my students have never finished high school and my students will hopefully be the first ones in their families to go to college. My classroom consists primarily of students who are learning English as a second language. I also mainstream learning disabled students in my all inclusive classroom. In addition, I partner for enrichment activities with a 3rd grade class and a class of deaf and hard of hearing students who will also participate in this project.

My Project

My second grade students are about to begin science and Language Arts units on animal life cycles and animal camouflage including animals that live in the ocean. I would like my students to really learn about ocean animals and how they camouflage in a new and exciting way.

I'm asking for 14 books about ocean animals and how they camouflage, 36 shark and whale replica figures, a Sea Animal Specimen Center, a Sea Life Science Viewer, and materials for my students to make 5 amazing art projects.

My students will be able to look at the replicas of the sharks and whales as we read the books and learn about these amazing animals. They will get to use the Ocean Animal Specimen Center to look at 5 amazing specimens including a shark tooth, a piranha fossil a starfish, and stingray jaws. The follow-up art projects will include learning how to make origami sea animals, making paper plate sea turtles, making ocean animal suncatchers, making scratch art sea animals, and decorating the Ocean Animals Collage Boards and hanging them around the classroom.

This project will allow my class, our 3rd grade buddies, and our partner deaf and hard of hearing class to be able to go beyond just reading about ocean animals and animal camouflage in their science and Language Arts textbooks.

My students love science! I try to make my science lessons exciting by bringing science lessons to life so all students can be exposed to the science curriculum.
