Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach a 1st/2nd grade, regular education classroom in a large, urban public school setting in Chicago. My school has a large minority population and over 50% of students are low-income (classified as free lunch). Many of my students are first-generation American or have come to the U.S. in the past few years. For several of my students, reading out of a textbook (for those who can read) is simply confusing. When studying science, my students have a difficult time visualizing concepts such as matter, motion, and life cycles. For years, my only resource has been textbooks and whatever few materials I could gather on my own. Although I try my best, I simply do not have the necessary resources to engage my students and help them synthesize tough science concepts. My students desperately need hands-on resources that will support their learning by allowing them to conduct experiments, learn vocabulary terms, and become independent, engaged scientists in the classroom! For example, when studying matter, it is simply not enough to teach my students terms and give examples. They need to experience how solids change to liquids and liquids to gas. They need to classify, touch, and manipulate in order to truly synthesize the information they're learning. Research consistently shows that students don't learn when they are "talked at". They need to be engaged! Also, different students have different learning styles. So many students need to visualize and touch to really understand. If I were able to provide my students with these science materials, they would surely internalize the information and build upon it for years to come!! The materials I've chosen provide my students with an exciting, engaging, productive way to learn science! Your vital donation will make a difference in the lives of so many young, enthusiastic students! They are so inquisitive and enthusiastic about learning and they deserve the very best opportunities that we can offer them! Imagine the looks on their faces when we are reading from a textbook. Now, imagine the looks on their faces when I say, "Students, let's prepare for our experiment!"
