My high school has about 2000 students, with an additional 530 students from all over the school district for career technical classes. Many of my students come from low socioeconomic families, which means their access to outside resources may be limited. I see, on average, 32 students a day for physical/mental health issues, chronic disease management, and medical emergencies. My students need support to return to school after injuries/surgeries, and to advocate for educational accommodations related to their health needs in the classroom. This is my role, as a school nurse.

My students come to school with unmet needs in physiological, safety, love/belonging, and esteem, as described in Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. Each of the items I am requesting will help me help my students meet their unmet needs to reach what Maslow calls self-actualization. I am asking you to help me, help them.
My Project
A functioning scale allows me to measure student height and weight when requested by their doctor. A heating pad allows me to support students experiencing stomach cramps. This intervention can help students stay at school, which increases access to their education. A weighted blanket, sensory brush, and small squishes allows me to support students with anxiety return to class sooner. I want to do a thorough assessment on each student who comes to my office. Part of that assessment includes a blood pressure. An automatic blood pressure cuff allows me to assess a student’s status during a medical emergency faster.
