Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are a majority Latino population, most are first, second and third generation from recently immigrated families. We have over 70% free or reduced price lunch provided for our students. We have a shockingly sizable homeless student population.

Literacy has been the focus of our school since our new principal started, and being a heavily bi lingual school, it serves our community well; In support last year I started the Walker Honorary Library; It started out with only my donated books, but is now a near 1500 title commodity, with first editions and rare books - Help the “Walker Library club,” protect and catalog these books to help grow literacy across the Latino community.

The school is improving year by year in all regards recently, while still helping new immigrant children in developing themselves and assisting their families in supporting them, developing the community in turn. All despite the school and area having been known for gang, crime and violence issues for many years previous. This Library will help continue the trend by stewarding and fostering not just literacy but also community, protecting and growing success until it becomes part of the fabric of our beautiful community!

My Project

As he retired my friend Eric Walker gave me a gift. It was his prized teaching possession. A poster of Jon Carlos and Tommy Smith on their podium at the Mexico City Olympics, fists up, clad in black leather. I asked why I would deserve such a thing, he pointed to the white guy who had gotten second place. "That's you Boyd, those gloves these two were wearing were this Aussie' gloves. He had a chance to admonish the action and save his international running career after, but he refused. Not out of agreement, but out of respect for their earned space on that podium. So this is yours now." My friend did not receive the recognition he deserved teaching, this Library is my attempt to make sure he does in retirement.

The library was at first, only half of my personal collection, but is now a behemoth of 1500 titles comprising about 2000 books, 300 magazines, supplies and shelves; Due to its size we need your help to keep it alive, with a Brother P-touch PTD600VP Label Maker and TroheStar Wireless Barcode Scanner to properly check out and inventory, this treasure trove of books will be protected and cataloged effectively assuring its ability to serve our community for years to come.

The library's designed as a club for reading enthusiasts and accelerated readers to service its host school and community at large with the goal of fostering literacy across all peoples, especially immigrant youth. Big Joe 645624 Dorm Bean Bag Chairs will help the library attract new clientele by making the library a great space to relax and read the books on offer. It is the ONLY student administered and curated library in existence, I only facilitate or veto the choices of the librarians due to my liability.
