My students need books to help improve their reading and analysis skills. Having more copies of the books they will read will increase their understanding of analysis through learning annotation.
My students are working against all odds to improve their reading and writing skills. My goal for the end of the year is to make them better readers, thinkers, and writers. The biggest challenge I deal with is working in a community where education is not a priority.
They come from low socioeconomic backgrounds where education is not a focus at home.
My school is a Pre-K through 5th grade school that is 100% free lunch. We are between the Mississippi River and the Gulf of Mexico and have been hard hit by storms like Hurricanes Katrina and Issac.
My students have little background knowledge, as most do not leave the area for anything but a hurricane. Using books like "Monster", "The Percy Jackson Series", "The Harry Potter Series" and other books will be used to help broaden my students background knowledge through reading and discussion. These books will be used for Guided Reading groups and well as Sustain Silent Reading books. Having popular reading books that my students are interested in brings a lot to our discussions and background knowledge as they relate what they are reading to things that happen in their everyday lives.
