Help Raise Reading and Vocabulary Levels!

My students need an updated classroom library and resources to enhance their vocabulary.

My Students

Remember reading (and hating) My Antonia? How about Little Women? The Old Man and the Sea? Well, times haven't changed much- my students hate reading them, too! Take pity on DC public school students (and a frazzled teacher) and help me build a new classroom library and a vocabulary building center!

Working in a low income, low performing public school in DC has its challenges- especially because of lack of resources and interesting reading material for urban youth.

My eighth grade students are vivacious learners who crave books in which they can relate, and would greatly benefit from constant practice with grade level vocabulary. Many of my students read two to three years below their grade level and are in need of the vocabulary enhancement and critical thinking skills that come along with being a seasoned reader and writer.

My Project

Every ninety minute class has a required fifteen to twenty minute time slot for "Silent Sustained Reading," or SSR. SSR can be a serious challenge when my students are not interested- often resulting in throwing objects or insults. With the help of donorschoose, my students will be able to read and reflect upon reading material that's relevant to them, all the while building their critical thinking and vocabulary skills. With the vocabulary resources, my students will be able to catch up to their grade-level-peers in other states.

Donations to my project will help my students enjoy reading; something that so many of them have yet to experience.

Please help impact the literary life of a DC public school student!
