Working in a low income, low performing public school in DC has its challenges- especially because of lack of resources and interesting reading material for urban youth. My eighth grade students are vivacious learners who crave books in which they can relate, and would greatly benefit from constant practice with grade level vocabulary. Many of my students read two to three years below their grade level and are in need of the vocabulary enhancement and critical thinking skills that come along with being a seasoned reader and writer.
