My Students

Which city has the highest income inequality among the nation's 50 largest cities? Atlanta. How do we close that gap? The most powerful weapon in the world, education. Welcome to The Garden, the coolest social studies class in the A. The theme is: where we learn, we grow! In The Garden we develop fully loaded weapons. Not guns, no knives, but educated, powerful agents of community changes.

Despite having one of the highest homeless populations of middle schools in the city, the scholars of The Garden are fully invested in closing Atlanta's inequality gaps, by growing and contributing in and to their community.

In 6th grade, my scholars' worlds and lives are changing. They have the energy, curiosity, and drive to figure out how to apply their education and passions to where it matters. Unlike the traditional social studies class, The Garden involves students in meaningful, real, creative, hands-on activity and problem based learning. In The Garden scholars learn and grow in different ways, on paper, on their feet, and with technology. Scholars in The Garden, love to find answers to their questions about the past, debate current issues, and find ways to positively contribute to tomorrow.

My Project

What if I told you that my middle school classroom community had no rules? You would probably imagine a chaotic scene. Children swinging from hanging fluorescent lights from vines of incomplete worksheets. No rules does sounds primitive, but in actuality our progressive classroom is powered by norms, expectations, and student choice.

Student choice is the greatest power in the classroom.

When students can choose how they demonstrate mastery and meet expectations it is more likely that being engaged in the learning experience becomes a norm. Providing these durable, yet comfortable floor chairs gives opportunities for differentiated choice seating.

In our inclusion class students with IEPs, or individualized education plans for students with special needs, often work best when given frequent goals, rewards, and preferential seating. Traditional and confining desk do not always work best for all students or activities. Floor chairs can be used in a variety of multi modal and sensory learning lessons and as a positive consequence when students choose to meet or exceed their goals and expectations. Sitting where and how you want will increase the positive environment and build class engagement.
