My Students
My school is located in Queens, N.Y., the most culturally and ethnically diverse neighborhood in the world. The children who enter my classroom, come from all over NYC. As such, they carry with them a wealth of knowledge, that contributes to a dynamic classroom. My students include Advanced Placement (AP), general education, and special education students. In addition, many of my students also come from economically disadvantaged homes. Therefore, many times, resources are scarce.
In my classroom of 34 students, there are 30 different countries represented as a result of the cultural diversity that exists among my students.
They are eager to learn and motivated to push themselves to do their best. There is an atmosphere of acceptance and trust in our classroom that encourages students to step out of their comfort zone and challenge themselves to set high academic and social goals that they can work toward together.
My Project
Many students arrive at school hungry without having had breakfast or they remain after school for various tutoring or sports programs only to return home to an empty nest where a nutritional meal is not waiting for them. Providing students with a healthy snack to bring home with them or to start their day off with will help to provide them with the nourishment they need.
When students' life essentials are provided for, they are able to better focus on their academics.
Students are better able to focus in school and complete homework after school when their hunger is being satisfied and they are being provided with the nutrition that their bodies need to properly function.
