it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach a class of 25 bright, lovable and amazing second grade students. I work in an extremely impoverished area in New York City. Although I am not from the area, there is just something about the kids that go to my school that I have become very attached to. My school is a barrier-free school. This means that my school opens its doors to all children in the community, regardless of their physical or mental handicap. You see children in wheelchairs and walkers learning and prospering right alongside their peers. It's an amazing thing to experience.
This is my eleventh year teaching. Throughout the years, I have seen my students produce amazing pieces of work that they are so truly proud of. I had a laminating machine for a several years but it broke last year. My class this past year didn't have the opportunity and excitement of preserving their work. Now, when I give it back to them after it's been hung up, the work is faded and has lost its original charm. I don't feel that they value it like my students did when I was able to laminate it.
When I was in elementary school, many of my teachers laminated my work for me and I still look back at it to this day. In order to allow my students to preserve their work so that they can have it forever to look back on when they are teenagers and adults, I'd love to receive a laminating machine that I could put all of their prized pieces of work through. I went to the store to laminate as much as I could this past year, but the cost quickly added up.
If my class received a laminating machine, we would be able to use it as a classroom tool to preserve their work at the end of each unit of study. Myself, as well as my students, would be incredibly grateful to have this opportunity.
