"LAB School Kid". This is what my students are often described as. In our area, the term comes with a certain connotation. Most believe the "LAB School Kids" are criminals, dropouts, or some other type of undesirable students. Few actually know the real story about my students.
"I believe everyone has a story, and it is important that we encourage all students to tell theirs." This statement could not be more accurate for my students.
In my years at the LAB School, I have learned that most students have a tough story---- the kind of story that none of us ever want our own children to have. Many of them come from broken homes or drug-addicted parents. Some of them just lack anyone in their cheer-leading section. Most of them fall below the poverty level in our area. But this is not all that defines my kids.
My kids are also resilient. They are strong and brave and not afraid to face a challenge. They are smart---- maybe not always in the academic sense, but always in the way that keeps them alive, clothed and fed. Most importantly? They are capable.
My Project
Having this set of Chromebooks will give me more resources to make my classroom technologically inclusive. I plan to create a Google Classroom site and utilize websites such as Front Row and Quizlet to help support a blended learning environment in my classroom that will appeal to the various learning styles and levels with which I work.
Current and updated materials are in short supply in my school.
Most textbooks are around 20 years old, supplemental materials are few, and technology is lacking. Having these Chromebooks will help me keep my students competitive and up-to-date on the technology and concepts that they will be faced with when they finish high school.
Most of my kids are already at a disadvantage when they graduate high school. I believe it is my job to prepare, encourage and support them as much as possible so that THEY believe that they are capable of the things that I KNOW they can do.
