I teach prek students who are handicapped, special needs, and typical learning, in a rural area of West Virginia. I want to turn my classroom into a hands on aquarium. The students in West Virginia, do not get many opportunities, to experience the ocean and animals that call it home. I decided I would try to turn my classroom into a learning aquarium. The students will learn about sea life, marine biology, oceanography, and keeping our oceans clean. They might become inspired to help keep our seas clean and help protect the endangered animals there. I would like them to realize that they may be small, but they can make a difference to all ocean animals, and the place they call home.
My Project
My students will learn why it is important to preserve, protect, and value, all sea life. They will learn to become stewards of the sea and the animals that call the ocean home. We will learn about keeping our sea life in clean water, and why is it important for every living thing to have clean water. We will learn about things they can do to help keep all water clean. We will learn why we pick up our trash and try not to use straws. We will learn about careers in the areas of oceanography and marine biology. We will look at animals that are endangered, such as the Vaquita dolphin and the Orca's salmon source. They will become defenders of our seas.
The most important thing we will learn about, is trying to help our endangered sea life, and protecting their food sources; such as the Orca's lack of salmon.
We will come up with ideas by studying our sea life in the classroom. We will have jobs to keep the aquarium water clean, to keep their fish fed, and to maintain a proper temperature. We will make posters for our community about keeping the waterways clean for our animals. They will take ownership of their own sea.
