My Pre-K students with special needs have significant communication delays that makes it challenging to interact with each other and adults around them. They need and require different resources to help them communicate when they are unable to use their own words.
My students are Pre-K/EC and their age ranges from 3-5.
They class is blended with children with different types of special needs (Autism, Developmental Delays, fine and gross motor delays, Speech Delay, and other Disorders). All of the students have some type of language and communication deficits. The students have difficulty understanding language and communicating their wants and needs. We use several augmentative communication devices, sign language to communicate, and picture symbols. The school is a Title 1 school with about 98% of the students are on free and reduced lunch. Most of the parents are single parents, which leaves little money to help with materials needed in the classroom.
My Project
My Pre-K students total communication will improve in the classroom by giving the nonverbal students and the students with limited communication a voice. The iPad will also give them another resource to communicate their wants and needs. The students I work with require consistency and repetition in order to retain learned skills. The students need multiple opportunities to learn to communicate and develop new skills daily. Having an iPad in the classroom will allow me to provide modified lessons for individual students to meet their needs. The iPad will also allow the young students to work on their pace until these skill are learned. With using the iPad and different apps we can develop communication boards to share with families and other therapists so that we can all work together to help our young students with disabilities communicate.
Having an iPad in our Pre-K/special education class will help them meets so many skills.
The iPad will help the young students with special needs be able to easily communicate their needs and wants. The students will be able to work on their academic and functional skills. This iPad will help the students develop skills that will increase their independence and their communication skills. The iPad will open the door of communication and reduce their frustration in the class.
