Help me give my students with autism and communication delays ipad minis to help them communicate with others. Many of my Pre K students with developmental delays have speech and language delays or are completely non-verbal.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My school is located in the heart of a low-socioeconomic neighborhood. Our school makes the students feel like they are at home. Each teacher is extremely passionate and is determined to "reach all and teach all." We try to expose the students to many things that they may not get to see or get to do in their home life. Technology has been the biggest eye opener to our students in the school. Unfortunately, many of our students do not have access to various types of technology in their homes. My class consists of Pre-K students with various special needs ranging from autism, to down syndrome, learning disabilities, and developmental delays.
My Project
Students with autism and students with language delays need to learn how to use pictures and words to communicate. Non-verbal students can use i pads as voice output devices to express their wants and needs. Communication software on i pads is a simple, portable way for Pre-k students to build a foundation of communication.

Picture/word symbols can be used in a variety of ways to teach students with autism and developmental delays to communicate. Non-verbal students can use the ipads to generate sounds when they cannot. Students can also combine picture/word symbols to create simple requests, make choices and express their feelings.
