Help Our Students Shed Some Light on Our Art Projects!

Help me give my students lighting that will not hurt our heads and can give cool effects to our work! We also need flashlights to provide emergency lighting for when we lose power in our windowless room!

My Project

I teach Art at a Title One, low-income school in Knoxville, Tn. I have been teaching here for 5 years (in other rooms) and while our school recently received a lighting upgrade, it has caused problems for my room and art students who focused on making great art.

In our classroom we have ZERO windows, which means we must use our overhead lights at all times, the only problem is there are 18 lights and they are BRIGHT!

Students have complained about eye strain and headaches during the year. We cannot turn off some of the lights, the lights are not grouped properly to allow a few lights on while others remain off. There are 18 lights in my room, while in a normal room (the same size) there are only 10, which makes the room too bright. I have painted the walls and bought covers for some of the lights so we can see the screen without a glare, but we need more.

We also found this year that when the power goes out, it is very, very dark! As storm season approaches, I feel like it would be safer to have multiple flashlights to help us collect our belongings. It would also make it safer for students to use the bathrooms in the dark as there are no lights there either once you enter a stall.

My great Artists learning both fine arts and practical skills and having lighting that can go from soft to bright or florescent in a click of the button has been a request this year. They love the soft lighting when they draw, the brighter lights when they sew, and the fun colors when we use paint! Please help their dream come true and help us shed some light on their art!
