Environmental degradation is a formidable issue plaguing Hawai`i’s students and endangering their future. Considering that Hawai`i’s environment continues to be compromised and students consistently struggle in science and math, we face an urgent need for innovative learning opportunities.
Each morning I greet a group of students who come from a variety of backgrounds and experiences.
Many of my students are struggling to cope with the multifaceted dilemmas of living in extreme poverty. Yet, these students have so much to offer our classroom community. From the student that consistently strives for excellence in spite of his different learning abilities, to the student that is able to make us all laugh, each of these students has unique qualities and talents that I strive to nurture. It’s these students that motivate me to go to work each morning, compelling me with their stories and capturing my heart with their willingness to persevere amongst rampant injustices.
My Project
Visiting Camp Erdman and participating in their Environmental Education Program will enable our sixth grade students to learn more about comprehensive environmental health and develop the skills to become ecological stewards in our community. The experiential activities offered at Camp Erdman will offer our students valuable understandings about our environment. The hands-on environmental education opportunities offered at Camp Erdman will encourage my students to make positive changes in our community. This field trip will provide our students, youth who possess immense potential and are given so few chances, with an invaluable opportunity to expand their understanding of environmental science in a meaningful setting. This field trip will provide my students with the foundation to emerge as caring young environmental leaders in our community.
Remember, the future of Hawai`i depends on the condition of it’s children.
Out here on the coast our children possess infinite potential and are given so little. If our children are given the chance, nurtured and provided with meaningful learning opportunities, I know they can develop into incredible leaders.
