Our school is a very unique and diverse school where students want to learn and grow.
They imagine worlds both alike and different from their own, they construct objects out of any resources they can manipulate with their small hands, and they see opportunity for creation even when adults cannot.
Our students and their families come from all over the world especially Latin America, Africa, and the Middle East. They are an enthusiastic, energetic, diverse group with a hunger for learning and an unbridled capacity for creativity when provided with tools and materials they can access. Our teachers and families are working hard together daily to support students in developing their mathematical and spatial reasoning skills, as well as harnessing their creative energy to help develop their intellectual abilities. Our students naturally connect reading, writing, math, social studies, art, and science together, but we need more high quality, creative materials and experiences to allow them to connect all of those subject matters in a comprehensive way while reaching the Common Core and Next Generation State Standards.
We have a 75% free and reduced lunch population and a 36% ELL population.
My Project
Our sixth graders have chosen to take on the challenge of the school carnival this year. They will be planning, designing, and leading the entire school and surrounding community through an afternoon of learning, playing, and exploration. While we received many donations for the building supplies required for their games, the students have requested many materials that we cannot make ourselves due to lack of time and/or money. All 75 sixth graders have learned about comparative shopping and the choices listed on this project were chosen and defended by the students themselves.
The donations of these materials will ensure a fun-filled, learning opportunity for our students and their families as they discover how these carnival games and activities can be explained through S.T.E.A.M.
(Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics).
Our students specifically requested the candy to fill their homemade probability piñata game, the cotton candy machine because according to their calculations -it will maximize profit potential, the inflatable football goals for a physics game on force and gravity, the balloon animals and face paint for an artistic touch to the carnival, the water balloon launcher as an integral part to the Angry Birds Launcher, the bumper boppers for a safe wrestling game, and the photo booth props to support the scenery our kids will paint for great memories!
