My Students

My students (and I) are extremely passionate about hands-on learning, as most 10 year-olds are. The materials requested will allow us to explore STEM education in a way that provides students with a deep conceptual understanding of material, rather than a simple procedural grasp. We can do it!

Curious; the word that immediately comes to mind when I think about the 36 students who enter my classroom each and everyday.

Being that our school is largely focused on outdoor education, the students are constantly asking about experiments, topics, animals and all things related to nature. I want my students to be able explore this curiosity, and to combine it with the realities of math and science in everyday life. The area surrounding our school is an incredible resource, and most of the materials requested would overlap with/ enhance the outdoor education experience for students. These adventurous and curious minds deserve to be fulfilled in the classroom.

My Project

As I mentioned earlier, our school greatly values outdoor education. Therefore, most of the resources will be used to enhance the outdoor learning experience for students. For example, the document camera will be particularly useful during our unit on ecosystems; students will be able to collect materials from the school's surrounding ecosystems and show their findings to the rest of the class using the document camera. The balance scale and butterfly kit will be essential resources during our units on changes in matter and the life cycle; both resources would provide a more hands-on learning experience for students. The math manipulatives are also incredible resources in the classroom. I have a few sets of manipulatives in my classroom now, but not nearly enough for each of my students to explore individually and at their own pace. When students are able to SEE math come to life through the use of manipulatives, the learning experience is immediately intensified.

I believe that the best gift I can give my students is growth.

I want to grow my students' curiosity, to grow their passion for learning, to grow their desire to know more and to delve deeper, to grow their abilities to problem-solve, to grow their love of the outdoors, and to grow their confidence as 21st century learners. The resources that I am hoping to receive for my classroom will allow me to grow my students in all of these ways, and then some. Please consider helping our STEM grow...
