This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Ever wish you were in a rock band? That's what Guitar Club is. I teach 32 inner city middle school students to play as a rock band. They learn guitar, piano, bass, singing and drums. Last assembly June '15 we played Lean on Me, Sweet Child of Mine, and I Like to Move It [and danced].
My students are sixth through eighth graders from the inner city of NYC.
Most live in the Bronx and Washington Heights, and almost all kids in my school live in poverty. Despite the challenging environment, our public school is very well run, and offers music and art programs for students as an outlet of expression. I teach an after school Guitar Club rock band that looks exactly like the movie "School of Rock." The kids absolutely love it, and have become the talk of the school. I also teach guitar/rock band to a special education class during the day, who especially appreciate the chance to rock.
My Project
We need this electric guitar and equipment because some of old equipment has broken down and doesn't work anymore. I always encourage my students to rock hard and have fun, but inevitably things get dropped or damaged. This equipment will restock our classroom with the things that help our rock band class function and have fun together playing music.
My students' passion for music has increased exponentially since I started guitar club five years ago.
Many students tell me it's their favorite part of the day. Since a lot of my students experience challenges in their lives that bring stress, the chance to make music is priceless. We all feel like Guitar Club is therapeutic for us. We play concerts for the whole school that rock the house, which have had a massive positive impact on my guitar kids and the whole school. It's seriously so fun.
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
