Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

In this day and age of high electronic use, it has become increasingly challenging to motivate kids to read! As with any skill, reading can be taught over and over, but if it is not practiced with authentic literature, growth is less likely to occur. Our school has been fortunate enough to have the Renaissance Accelerated Reading program for the past several years and found that it has been successful in encouraging students to read. Renaissance gives our students a chance to feel successful and discover the joys of reading. Students read self-selected books independently, with family members, and team up with students from other classes to read together which also amplifies the sense of community within our school building.

With STAR assessment and Accelerated Reader, our students have important resources to be successful readers and foster life-long reading habits.

So far this year, our students have read 13,387 books and 23,742,173 words. They have set monthly goals and worked hard to reach them; earning prizes and fun, experiential opportunities along the way. We also set school-wide reading goals and enthusiastically celebrated our collaborative achievements. We hope to continue to inspire and motivate our students even more next year!
