This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Imagine hearing a four-year-old say, "Can I take an apple home? We don't have a lot of food in my house."
My students are growing up in an unsafe, extremely economically disadvantaged neighborhood.
As Pre-Kindergartners, this is their first experience in school. My students are learning to love school through our exciting hands-on, experience-based classroom. Unfortunately, my school is lacking tremendously in resources and funding, and we were provided with hardly any materials.
Our class has story time every day, where the children gather on the carpet as I read aloud to them. Hearing a story should be one of the most exciting parts of school, but our classroom library does not have the exciting and engaging books that we need.
My Project
My students need read-aloud books such as Strega Nona, Knuffle Bunny, and The Kissing Hand, that are exciting and engaging. The students need the types of books that they ask to hear over and over again. They need the books that when mentioned to an adult elicit the response, "I used to love that story!" My students should be able to come to the carpet for story-time excited to hear a gripping book that will be adored for generations.
These books will be a tremendous asset to our classroom.
We are in desperate need of exciting books for story-time. My students deserve the same exposure to these wonderful classics as any other four-year-olds.
