My students need an incubator, a chick life cycle exploration set, and books to learn about hatching chicks and their life cycle.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Imagine hearing a four-year-old say, "Can I take an apple home? We don't have a lot of food in my house."
My students are growing up in an unsafe, extremely economically disadvantaged neighborhood.
As Pre-Kindergartners, this is their first experience in school. My students are learning to love school through our exciting hands-on, experience-based classroom. Unfortunately, my school is lacking tremendously in resources and funding, and we were provided with hardly any materials.
This spring, my students will be doing a study on "growing and changing," partially focusing on the life cycles of various plants and animals. As the old proverb goes, "Tell me and I'll forget. Show me and I may remember. Involve me and I'll understand." My students want to be involved in hatching chicks!
My Project
With the materials in this project, my students will be able to witness firsthand the 21-days it takes for incubated fertilized chicken eggs to hatch into baby chicks. With the books and life cycle exploration kit, my students will be able to understand what is happening inside the eggs as they wait in the incubator. Finally, when the chicks hatch, my students will have the experience of feeding, taking care of, and generally being responsible for small living creatures!
Many of my students have never left their block in the Bronx.
The experience of hatching and taking care of a farm animal is one that all children should experience, and one that I know they will never forget!
