Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are amazing! They come to school every day eager to learn and willing to challenge themselves. Most of them come from bilingual homes and are identified as English Learners, and while they are not all at grade level, they work hard each and every day and have made incredible growth! Over half my class has grown a year or more in their reading level this year alone! I teach in a low socio-economic area of our town, and our school is over 75% free and reduced-price lunch.
My goal as a teacher is to prepare my students not only for high school and college, but beyond so they can live full and productive lives by giving them creative and meaningful learning experiences that will create life-long learners.
While I cannot control what happens in their homes, I can absolutely control what happens in my classroom. By providing positive and creative learning experiences using technology and resources they wouldn't normally have access to, I am hopeful to be able to continue to inspire my students to continue on their path of academic excellence!
My Project
Please help our non-fiction classroom library grow! Non-fiction text makes up a large portion of what adults and college students read, but it is often lacking at the elementary level. To help prepare my students for college and beyond, they need access to quality non-fiction. The titles I've chosen are tied directly to our 5th grade science or social studies curriculum or are important to our community and world.
By having access to these texts, my students will be able to go beyond the walls of our classroom and build their knowledge of the world around them.
And you never know, by spending time with quality non-fiction texts, my students may just find a new favorite subject, animal, event, or time period which will help create life-long learners!
