My students need lab supplies such as beakers and syringes to complete the 13 labs required for AP Biology.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
This is the first year that my school offers AP Biology. We lack resources. My students are in desperate need of supplies needed to complete the 13 labs that are part of the curriculum. These lab experiences are a necessary component of the college-level coursework that is expected in AP Biology.
My school is located in Los Angeles, California.
My students are from a high-poverty, high-risk area. Our student population is 94% Hispanic/Latino and 81% participate in the Free or Reduced-Price Lunch Program. Most will be the first in their family to attend college. The AP Biology class consists of 24 students. They are 10th graders taking an AP class for the first time. Most have expressed anxiety over the anticipated heavy workload. However, they are eager to learn and willing to work hard for success!
My Project
This grant is for 3 labs that are part of the AP Biology curriculum. Each consists of a teacher-guided portion and a student-generated inquiry lab. As part of the artificial selection lab, students use fast-growing plants to study artificial selection. Students select a plant trait. Then, they will cross-pollinate only selected plants. They will collect seeds, plant them, and examine their offspring. As part of the diffusion/osmosis lab, students study the movement of molecules across membranes. Students explore the relationship between surface area and volume by making several models of cells with agar. Then, students create models of cells using dialysis tubing. Students fill these bags with various solutions (salt, sugar, and protein) and determine diffusion rates. As part of the photosynthesis lab, students study the factors that affect the rate of photosynthesis in living leaves. They use the floating leaf disk procedure to measure oxygen production.
This grant will ensure that my students have access to the science materials necessary for a truly college-level AP Biology class.
These labs will advance their knowledge of biology and keep them fascinated with science. This will contribute to success on the AP Exam and future science courses, increase their appreciation of our natural world, and maybe inspire them to pursue a career in science!
