Help me give my students popular titles like the newest Dog Man book, Baby-Sitters Club graphic novels, and the Five Nights at Freddy Fazbear series to promote independent, choice reading.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
For six years, the library at our school was shuttered due to severe budget cuts. Six years ago the library reopened with funding for a Teacher Librarian position, but no budget to purchase books. Through donations and fundraising I have slowly updated the collection, and students are now coming to the library regularly to check out books. But we are still far short of the recommended number of books per student. That means there just aren't enough of the "good books" to go around.
My students attend a Title I, inner-city Los Angeles middle school with 520 students, of which 99 percent qualify for free or reduced-price lunches.
A quarter of the students are English Learners.
Reading scores are low at our school, but we are on a mission to change that, by giving every student a chance to find that "one good book" that will hook him or her on reading.
My Project
After a full year of remote learning we can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel. However, as exciting as that is, it presents a challenge to our school library. We currently have 400+ books checked out, many of which will never be returned, leaving large gaps in our already limited collection.
The books in this grant will help us fill gaps in our popular series and replace books that went missing during remote learning, so that when students return to physical school they will see books they want to read on the shelves.
We all know that to grow as readers students need to read books that interest them. But during the last year our students have struggled to access high-interest reading materials in the remote learning environment. Now they are out of the practice of reading independently.
One way we want to encourage students to start the habit of reading books again is by stocking the library with high interests books they will be excited to check out and read. The books in this grant will be available to all students in the school. Students will be able to check out the books for two weeks. They can read the books in school or take them home.
