Help Our Language Learners in Math

Help me give my students some math tools to learn math in Chinese more effectively.

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Wang's classroom raised $805

My Students

In my classroom, the students are not allowed to speak any English for achieving the best language learning, which means a variety of teaching materials are needed for students to understand all subjects. Math is the most difficult part. As a teacher in a rural school, I feel a strong sense of urgency to provide as much as language-learning materials.

I have two classes where there are 41 students in total.

The students are from English-speaking families whose parents really want their kids to learn a second language. However, the level of most of the students is very limited and most kids can not get language support from families. Some of them are really struggling. Meanwhile, the school is located in a rural area and is the only school that does dual immersion in the community.

In the past two years, my students in a Chinese program have experienced so many obstacles. Students needed to stay at home when COVID-19 hit two years, so they are left behind for language learning. This year, the number of absences in the classroom is high for a variety of COVID-19 related factors.

My Project

Math is hard for most second graders. It is even harder when you learn math in a second language. However, a variety of math manipulatives can help students understand the concept when the math is taught in Chinese.

We are using a math online learning program called ST Math that requires headphones.

The program provides a variety of tasks that help students review math. However, I do not have any headphones in my classroom.

Privacy Shields are used for preventing students from seeing each other when doing the test. I often see the same "wrong" answers from students' test papers.

By using Folding Geometric Shapes, my students can know what a flat shape is when a 3D model is expanded. Double-sided Magnetic Money can help students know the details of each money and know-how to exchange the money. The concepts above are both included in the Utah Math Standards.

Any other magnet number lines, cubes, and dice are all for students to acquire a better number sense and do math activities. For example. the dice can be used to practice comparing numbers and the cube can have well-below students get a concrete image of numbers in their numbers. We do practice together every day both in Math and Chinese (Chinese characters), whiteboard and markers can be used for that, which is a way to check students' understanding for teachers.

In a rural school, there are not many math learning resources for students to do hands-on activities instead of doing a pile of worksheets. What I hope is that students can get enough manipulatives to get the idea and "touch up" materials to learn in the doing.
