Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Can you imagine learning from your chess teacher that your chess skills are strong enough for you to compete at the national level against kids from all over the country? Can you imagine then realizing that there's no way your family can afford to pay the cost of sending you to Chess Nationals?
Our students are bright, enthusiastic and highly motivated children who attend an inner city elementary school and whose dreams are not limited by the size of their families' incomes.
Almost all of these kids are "English Language Learners", and many are the first generation of their family to attend school in the United States. For these children to have the opportunity to attend a national chess tournament in another state seems like a dream come true. Unfortunately, for many of these children the expense of attending is way beyond the budgets of their hardworking families.
Week after week, these children faithfully attend chess instruction after school and spend most Saturdays and many school holidays attending local chess tournaments around the city. They work hard to improve their chess skills and their mental focus and stamina, hoping that all this hard work will earn them a coveted spot as one of the team members chosen to represent our school at Nationals.
My Project
We are in our sixth year of steadily building a strong chess team, "The Knightmares" - a name chosen by the children themselves to represent their sense of fun as well as their determination to be strong and competitive chess players. In local tournaments, our team has consistently won medals, trophies and team plaques.
For the last three years our team has earned the opportunity to attend the national tournaments in Dallas, Texas, in Atlanta, Georgia, and - just last year - in Nashville, Tennessee.
The U.S. Chess Federation has once again chosen Nashville as the location for the 2013 national tournament. This year's tournament promises to be an unforgettable experience as both elementary and high school chess players from all over the country come together to compete!
We are hoping to be there, too! We are working hard to raise funds at our school to make this happen, but the costs are great, and we need your help to make this dream come true for these great kids!
Our students are so deserving of this experience!
They have worked so hard, studying diligently and giving up free time, in order to "make the cut". They know that they have to be more than great chess players; they must also demonstrate personal responsibility and the ability to be a good and supportive team player.
For these children, this "dream-come-true" experience would be out of reach without the support of donors who understand that playing chess is also about building character.
