Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember what it was like when you were little and you couldn't read yet? How frustrating is it to look at a book that you can't decode?? My students are still learning decoding strategies, but with TAG readers and books, they can read the high interest books they love!

My students are the best group of 4-5 year old learners.

They come from a variety of backgrounds and have an even bigger variety of interests! My students attend a social studies-based magnet school in Connecticut. Many of the children in my class are bilingual. Others need oral language modeling to develop their own language skills. Studies show that students who are reading high interest, engaging texts develop greater interest in reading, which in turn develops better readers! Due to the fact that our students come in at a variety of different reading levels, we struggle to find high interest texts that our students are all able to read. That is where the TAG readers come in!

My Project

I am requesting 1 pack of TAG readers and 1 set of Tag books. These TAG readers are one of the best tools we can offer our students! They will be incorporated into our Daily Five "Listen to Reading" activities - where the children will be invited to take the TAG readers and a book of their choice, find an inviting spot in the room, and "tag" the words to listen to their story being read aloud. This accomplishes two goals. It allows students to hear a fluent, accurate model of oral reading, and it allows students to choose a high interest, classic story book to read. The students will learn to model their oral reading after this example! They will learn one-to-one correspondence as they tag each word with the pen. They will also learn to read their favorite story books!

By giving my students these TAG readers, I expect to see a huge increase in their interest in reading.

I expect that my students will look forward to completing this activity each day. With the Daily Five approach to literacy, they will use these tools each day! I know that giving students these tools will help them become successful, lifelong readers!
